In one of their final acts before the summer break School District 27 trustees have agreed ask Premier Christy Clark and the Ministry of Education for an external, independent review on the impacts of class size and composition.

The resolution was made at the trustee’s June 24 meeting.

The teachers’ request for government to put designated limits on class size and composition in their contract is one of the key stumbling blocks to teachers reaching a negotiated settlement, and resulting in the teachers escalating job action to full strike mode in recent weeks.

In another resolution made at their June 24 meeting, a Grade 7 Outdoor Education Academy class was approved for Lake City Secondary.

In the 2014-2015 school year, students in the program will spend one day per week at Scout Island.

Many subjects will be taught in the natural environment.

The classroom teacher will also work closely with Sue Hemphill, Scout Island Nature Centre education coordinator, to develop outdoor curriculum that meets the Grade 7 learning outcomes.

The trustees approved a student fee of $100 to cover trips to Scout Island and Gavin Lake as well as any other extra costs.

At this point, 26 students have shown an interest in being in the class.
