In an effort to prevent wildfires, Seabird Island officials have declared a fire ban beginning Sunday, May 16, to September 30.
This is a ban for open burning and does not include a campfire ban, which will be added at a later date.
‘The ban will be in effect until September 30 (people will be able to burn again on October 1) unless we specify otherwise in the fall,” the notice from the Seabird Island Fire Department reads. “There will be no burn permits issued till after September 30.”

As of May 15, according to the government of B.C., there have been 129 wildfires across the province with 18 sparking in the last seven days. As of Friday, there were eight fires still active. The closest fire to the Observer readership area is near Squamish to the west and between Princeton and Peachland to the east.
