Second charge laid in fatal Surrey stabbing

SURREY — Police have laid a second manslaughter charge in the 2014 stabbing death of Donald Deweyn in Whalley.

Deweyn, 63, was stabbed during a fight with two men in a parking lot in the 10600-block of 135A Street at about 5 a.m. July 25, 2014.

Dylan Dempsey, 23, was charged with manslaughter on Aug. 20, 2014 police say further investigation has now lead to Tyson Cole, 28, being charged with manslaughter also. Cole is expected to appear in court on April 29.

Deweyn was a retired mill worker, widower, and was homeless when he died. Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said he had no criminal record “and no negative contact with police.”

Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said he hopes the “thorough work done” by investigators “will help bring closure to the family and friends of the victim.”
