An elderly woman sustained minor injuries on July 19 when she was struck in a crosswalk on First Avenue near Tim Hortons.

100 Mile House RCMP responded and later reported a northbound pickup truck driven by a non-resident man turned left off Highway 97 and clipped the pedestrian with the vehicle’s side mirror, causing minor injuries that sent her to hospital for treatment.

While he did not have the statistics readily available for accident volume at that particular location, Staff Sgt. Brian Coldwell said there were no inherent visibility obstructions for a left turn at the locations.

“In any intersection where there are multiple businesses – because that’s a four-corner intersection and it’s a high-traffic area with Tim Hortons there – with those distractions, you are more prone to have an accident there, than say a block or two away [with fewer businesses].”

He said the female pedestrian was believed to have been crossing First Avenue appropriately, in the marked crosswalk and in accordance to the traffic lights.

“Those intersections are certainly higher risk. There are a lot of distractions and we encourage people to pay attention.”
