Serial killer housed at Abbotsford’s Pacific Institution dies of natural causes

Camille Joseph Cleroux announced dead on Sunday, known as notorious Ottawa serial killer

Ottawa serial killer Camille Joseph Cleroux died of natural causes at Abbotsford’s Pacific Institution on Sunday.

An inmate who killed three people in Ottawa over a two-decade period has died of natural causes in custody at Pacific Institution in Abbotsford.

Camille Joseph Cleroux’s death occurred on Sunday and was announced by Correctional Service Canada in a press release on Tuesday.

At the time of his death, Cleroux had been serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder since June 26, 2012.

Cleroux admitted to bludgeoning his first wife to death with a rock in 1990. Her remains were then buried beneath his tomato garden.

He then went on to kill his second wife in 2003, beating her to death with a rock and dumping her in a shallow grave. He proceeded to kill a neighbour in 2010 after she refused to allow him to move into her suite. He later moved into her apartment.

He pleaded guilty to the three crimes in an Ottawa court in 2012.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC says it will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
