A local cyclist received life-threatening injuries following an incident on Monday morning.

At 9:44 AM, Port Alberni RCMP responded to a call of a man down with serious injuries on 3rd Ave near Dunbar St.

The 30-year-old Port Alberni man was riding his bike northbound, downhill on 3rd Ave when he suddenly lost control and fell off his bike, landing hard on the ground. He was unconscious and unresponsive at the scene.

The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

At this time, this incident is still under investigation. The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

“This is a sad situation and at least partially preventable, as we do not know what caused him to lose control in the first place,” said Cpl. Amelia Hayden, Port Alberni RCMP media liason. “I think this serves as a good reminder of the importance for people to make sure that they wear a helmet when riding a bike, are skateboarding or a riding a scooter.

“You never know when something might go awry.”
