A Falkland group that helps people in need is at risk of disbanding unless new volunteers sign up.
Several members of the Falkland-Westwold First Responders have recently left town and that means there are less people left to respond to motor vehicle accidents and other medical emergencies.
“If we cannot find volunteers, we will have to consider closing the service down,” said Judy Vandergucht, spokesperson.
Vandergucht believes the First Responders is vital to the wellbeing of residents of Falkland and Westwold.
“With no medical service in town, the First Responders have fulfilled a need to minimize the risk of disability and death,” she said, adding that the group is appreciative of all current and past members.
“There is no question that over the years they have done a remarkable job, and we are forever grateful to those who have come forward to provide us with their services.”
Based on Falkland’s tradition of community spirit, the group is hopeful new members will step forward.
“We are looking for volunteers, male or female, young or old with a wish to help those in crisis,” said Vandergucht.
“Knowledge of first aid is an asset but willingness to take the first responders training and work with B.C. Ambulance is essential. A calming nature is of great importance as sometimes it takes a while for the ambulance to arrive, and its important to reassure the victim.”
