A girl is in stable condition after suffering from severe wounds from an apparent gunshot.

Grand Forks RCMP received a report that a 17-year-old girl was found shot at Canning Road in Grand Forks on Sept. 22 around 12:10 a.m.

The female, who is not from this area, was found lying on the road suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim had called 911 using her cell phone requesting an ambulance and was still conscious when police and ambulance arrived – she was taken to Boundary Regional Hospital.

According to a police press release, it was learned she had sustained severe wounds that required surgery at the hospital. She was stabilized before she was transported for immediate surgery.

She is currently in stable condition following the surgery and the police investigation has determined that the shooting did not occur where the victim was located.

“There’s not much we can release at this moment but we are investigating. It will be a fairly long investigation by the looks of it,” Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison told the Grand Forks Gazette. “Police don’t believe there is any public danger presented by this incident to the people in our community.”

The area where she was found is a rural road with sparse population located just off Highway 3, west of Grand Forks.

The Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment General Investigation Section is assisting Grand Forks RCMP.

RCMP ask that anyone with information regarding the shooting call 250-442-8288.
