SHAMES MOUNTAIN is closed today for the second day in a row because of a high avalanche risk on the access road leading in from Hwy16 to the ski facility.
“The road will be reassessed in the morning and we will hopefully be able to get a crew up to start digging out the mountain so we can open for a Sunny Powder Wednesday,” reported a Shames Mountain employee on a broadcast email sent out last night.
Heavy snowfall has been a bonus to the mountain, which opened Dec. 16 with a free day, but the amount of snow and warmer weather brought on avalanche risks.
The mountain was closed Monday as was Hwy16 leading west from Terrace to Prince Rupert.
Hwy16 is now open again but to single lane traffic only about 55km west of Terrace while crews clear debris from the road’s surface.
Avalanche technicians from the transportation ministry have been triggering avalanches to bring down accumulations.
