A Shannon Lake area family has been displaced by fire due to what looks like improper disposal of a cigarette.
At approximately 9 p.m. Thursday, West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire in the Shannon Lake area.
“When the first fire crew arrived they encountered a well involved attic fire with heavy smoke showing from the eaves. The residents and pets had safely evacuated the home and were placed into the care of Emergency Support Services,” said Chad Gartrell, the assistant fire chief of the West Kelowna Fire Department.
“Fire crews were able to keep the fire contained to the attic space and minimize water damage to the interior of the structure. Fire investigators have determined the fire was accidentally caused by the improper disposal of smoker’s materials.”
West Kelowna Fire Rescue would like to remind residents to make sure they extinguish smokers materials in sturdy non-combustible ash trays.
A total of 18 firefighters were called to the scene and were supported by West Kelowna RCMP, BC Ambulance, BC Hydro and Fortis Gas.
