Chilliwack firefighters were at an early morning fire on Railway Avenue Thursday.

The blaze broke out in a storage building that neighbours say is being used by the homeless.

Firefighters arrived at around 7:30 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure, located in the 45000 block of Railway Avenue.

Crews secured a water supply and quickly knocked down the fire, which caused heavy fire damage to the storage structure and moderate fire and smoke damage to another small structure directly behind the storage building.

According to a witness, neighbours have been working with the building owner to keep trespassers off the property.

In fact, they met with police last night to see what could be done to keep them from returning, she said.

The fire department said there were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department officials.
