Shred Kelly partners with Fernie Skating Club

The Skate to the Night Ice Show will feature live music by local band Shred Kelly

The Fernie Skating Club has partnered with local band Shred Kelly for their annual skating show this year.

Sixty-two skaters from the club, aged three to 18 years old, will be showing off their skills for the Skate to the Night Ice Show at the Fernie Memorial Arena on February 7 and 8 at 7 p.m.

According to skating club secretary Alanna Corrigan, the skaters have put in “numerous hours of practice with recordings from Shred Kelly, including two new songs from their upcoming album.”

She noted that some of the young skaters didn’t know who Shred Kelly was when they first came on board for the event but that they are “big fans now.” The skating coaches had participated in live performance skate shows before so thought that it would be an interesting idea to try for this year’s show.

“The coaches had done live performances as skaters and they both love Shred Kelly’s music so we just asked Sage [McBride, Shred Kelly band member], she asked the boys and then it was a go,” said Corrigan. The band will perform from a stage built on the ice on one side of the arena, leaving the skaters plenty of room to do their routines.

“Since a lot of their music is based on living in the mountains, we have decided to do a Fernie theme,” explained Corrigan. “You will see skiing, biking, camping, swimming, animals, lots of flannel and fun stuff.”

Every year, the club does their skate show in order to showcase the talented skaters in the area but also to raise money for the club. Tickets are on sale for $15 for adults and $10 for children under seven. They can be purchased at Elk Valley Pizza, E.T. Salon and NO. 3 in Fernie.
