Another Abbotsford councillor has announced their intention to seek re-election this fall.
At an AbbotsfordFirst event last week, Coun. Ross Siemens, declared that he will try to retain his seat, according to a news release.
“Serving as an elected official is not about one person, it’s about a vision,” he said in the release. “The vision that Abbotsford will continue to be the economic and cultural hub of the Fraser Valley. Executing on that vision requires a team and I believe we have that team with AbbotsfordFirst.”
Siemens has owned Hub Motor Service since 1994. His election in 2014, alongside three other AbbotsfordFirst candidates, marked a return to politics, with Siemens having served on the council of the District of Abbotsford in the 1980s. He had been the youngest councillor in the district’s history when he was elected at age 23 in 1986.
After he left politics, he performed missionary work in Hong Kong, before returning home to buy the family business.
Siemens’s work on council was hailed by AbbotsfordFirst president Markus Delves.
“Ross has played a pivotal role in transforming the city’s approach to governance and long-term planning over the past four years,” he said.
Siemens’s candidacy leaves Coun. Moe Gill the only incumbent who has not declared his or her plans for the fall. Gill hasn’t yet responded to a request for comment.
The remainder of council, along with Mayor Henry Braun, have all said they will seek re-election.
Voters will head to the polls on Oct. 20.
