Workers have patched a sinkhole that formed over the weekend on the newly paved stretch of Fifth Street near the end of Johnston Avenue in Courtenay. The hole, about 18-24 inches deep, was first discovered Saturday morning. It was patched within the hour.
Heavy rain can cause minor sinkholes to form around valves boxes and manholes where compaction has been compromised, says Trevor Kushner, director of public works services. Recent work along Fifth has a one-year warranty period, so the City is reimbursed for any repair expenses, he added.
