Marine search and rescue personnel and others assisted in keeping a sinking sailboat afloat last night near Nanaimo.
Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue vessels were called out Sunday at about 10:30 p.m. to help a sailboat in distress near Five Finger Island, according to a press release from RCM-SAR Station 27 Nanaimo.
Marine search and rescue dispatched both its vessels and the B.C. Ferries vessel Queen of Cowichan was first on scene and threw a life preserver and provided lighting. The ferry had finished service for the night and was en route to Horseshoe Bay.
“The [sailboat] captain reported taking on water and having lost power. Rescue personnel put pumps on board to help owner keep the boat afloat, before towing it to Stone’s Marina for emergency haulout at 3 a.m.,” noted the RCM-SAR press release.
The sailboat was travelling from French Creek to Nanaimo.
