Friends in Arizona alerted Nanaimo Mounties about a woman sexually assaulted on the weekend.
A Nanaimo woman, 21, was online with friends in Arizona when she was attacked and sexually assaulted in her home on Kanaka Place in Nanaimo’s Hammond Bay area Sunday.
The attack happened at about 1:30 a.m. when the victim heard a noise at her bedroom window.
Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the woman turned around in time to see a man smash through the window.
O’Brien would not elaborate on the extremity of the sexual assault, but said the victim fought during then entire attack and possibly scratched her assailant’s neck. Her attacker then fled through the broken window.
The victim managed to get word to her friends in Arizona, who were still online, about the attack and they called 911.
Police responded with a tracking dog, which lost the trail at a fence in the home’s backyard.
“There was some means of getting away, possibly a vehicle, but we have no information about make and model,” O’Brien said. “Somebody may have hear a vehicle starting up about that time. That’s all we know.”
The woman is a student who shares a house with two male roommates who arrived home a short time after the attack. The men co-operated and assisted police during the initial investigation.
The victim suffered numerous scrapes, bumps and bruises, and was emotionally traumatized by the attack, but was able to provide a detailed description of her attacker.
The suspect is Caucasian, in his mid-30s, with a medium build, sunken cheeks, a pock-marked complexion, dark eyes with reddish/brown eyebrows. He also has a distinctive scar on the right side of his face that runs from his cheek to the corner of his mouth. He was wearing a blue hoodie with a yellowish logo on the front resembling a mountainous landscape.
O’Brien said the woman is now living out of town with friends at an undisclosed location.
“Our members have been working non-stop on the case since it came in,” O’Brien said.
