Calls about issues arising from water conditions causing slides, floods and tree falls dominate the police report this week, RCMP Sgt. Dave Nassichuk said on Tuesday.
The Creston detachment received a total of 79 calls for service from March 14-20.
March 14
• A tree was reported to be blocking traffic near Highway 3 at Canyon-Lister Road.
• Two youths reported to be smoking marijuana in a business’s washroom were gone when police arrived.
• A parked vehicle was hit by another vehicle in the 1000 block of Canyon Street.
• Minor damage occured when a driver backed into a parked vehicle at Cook Street and 12th Avenue.
• A length of flexible black drain hose dumped into a manhole near the intersection of Collis Street and Northwest Boulevard caused a drainpipe to clog.
• A found cell phone was returned to the grateful owner.
• A driver sustained minor injuries when his vehicle lost control in gravel on Highway 3A near Sirdar and went into the ditch. The car sustained severe damage.
• Reported overdue travelers going from Castlegar to Cranbrook were found “safe and sound in Salmo”, which would be a good name for a book.
• A male was arrested for assaulting his mother, and then released with no contact conditions and a promise to appear in court. He almost immediately broke the no contact condition and was arrested once again, only to be released a short time later by a Justice of the Peace.
March 15
• An injured deer on Highway 3 in Erickson was dispatched by police.
• A bike valued at $500 was stolen from a Cook Street apartment.
• The owner of a reported dangerous dog in Crawford Bay was warned to keep the animal on his property. The SPCA is involved in the complaint.
• A dog was reported stolen on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road. Police are investigating.
• A possibly intoxicated male was reported on Centre Road but he was not located by police.
• A mudslide was reported to be blocking traffic in the 2200 block of Goat River Road South.
March 16
• An Alberta driver who passed a stopped school bus in the 1400 block of Cook Street was sent a ticket.
• Police received the first report of a waterfall beside Highway 21.
March 17
• A driver reported three males stranded in their vehicle on Highway 3 near Kootenay Pass. Their vehicle had a flat tire but no spare, he said. Police did not locate the group or the vehicle.
• A seniors’ facility resident reported that a $5,000 cheque in his name had been cashed fraudulently.
• Family members who got into a physical dispute about a dog will not face charges.
March 18
• A driver caught going 131 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone at midnight on Highway 21 was ticketed for excessive speeding. His vehicle was impounded for 7 days.
• Police were notified that a Wynndel driveway was starting to wash out.
• Water was reported to be rushing over Highway 3 about 10km east of Kitchener.
• Four trees fell onto Highway 3A near Boswell, blocking traffic.
• An aggressive dog was reported to be chasing deer on a 25th Avenue property.
• Police notified the highways department after getting a report of a washout on 8th Street in Canyon.
• Police could not locate a driver who reportedly passed on a double line and then slammed on his brakes on Highway 3A near Wynndel.
• A mudslide and tree fall were reported on Highway 3A near Boswell.
March 19
• Ice from a waterfall fell onto Highway 3/95 about 5 km north of Yahk, blocking part of the road.
• A reported erratic driver passing on a double line at a high speed on Highway 3A was located, still speeding. The owner of the Saskatchewan vehicle was issued a ticket.
March 20
• Police assisted a Calgary hospital in notifying a next of kin about a death in the family.
• A northbound vehicle went off Highway 21 and into the ditch after hitting an icy patch.
• A slow, weaving vehicle reported on Northwest Boulevard was not located.
• A wallet found in the post office has been sent on to its owner in Calgary.
• Police set up a check stop on Highway 3 near Erickson Elementary School and checked 40 vehicles. No tickets were issued.
