Mudslides are causing significant challenges in a small community.
Since the weekend, there have been two or three slides on the northeast end of Cosens Bay, which is south of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. About five residences have been impacted.
“Some have sloughing next to them but there has been very little damage,” said Alastair Crick, with the Regional District of North Okanagan.
“Most of the damage is done to roads and foot paths.”
There was no one in the structures at the time.
The slides are likely a result of excessive ground water eroding soil, with some culverts becoming blocked.
Crick surveyed the area with a geologist Thursday.
“We’re looking at whether there is a risk to life and property and then we can make some decisions,” he said.
Depending on the geology results, one option could be to restrict access to the slide area.
“It has a lot of potential if it continues to rain and there’s soil erosion,” said Crick.
