About 100 people showed up for the candlelight vigil for Darryl Peters.
Tears, anger and regret filled the parking lot of Hope Secondary School, as attendees listened to speeches from representatives from various First Nations including Chawathil, Shxw’owhamel and Spuzzum.
The BC Coroners Service (BCCS) confirmed that Darryl, 14, was struck on Highway 7 at Chawathil Road by an eastbound semi truck late Monday evening.
“My son is going to rest in peace now, we went and had the Indian spiritual worker and he went over and lifted his spirit up where he was. Make him go home, because he is on his journey now,” said a woman.
The BCCS confirmed that no other accidents have happened on that highway recently.
RCMP added that the incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. The truck involved was an unloaded lumber truck and the driver was not injured.
The incident closed the highway for approximately six hours.
Police are continuing their investigations. They noted that Darryl was dressed in black.
