Back to school season is on the horizon and that means reduced speeds will be back in effect in school zones.
West Kelowna RCMP and bylaw services will be issuing friendly reminders to stick to speed limits in school zones and park in designated areas starting Sept. 3.
Between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days, the speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h. The limit remains in place until a sign at the other end of the zone the indicates the end.
West Kelowna also reminds people to put their phones down while driving as it is illegal and “puts the lives of everyone on the road at risk.”
“Drivers also need to yield to and stop for buses,” reads the release from the City of West Kelowna.
“When a school bus turns on its flashing red lights, vehicles in all lanes, in both directions, must stop. Drivers should be extra cautious around public transit too, as older students may be walking out into the street, in front of or behind a stopped bus. Yield to buses that are ready to pull back into traffic.”
Drivers can brush up on the rules of the road using ICBC’s Learn to Drive Smart guide, available at icbc.com.
