The Vermilion Forks Metis Association held its first annual fishing derby at Marten’s Lake on Sunday, March 1.

“Although the fish caught were small, the kids had a great time and for a few it was their first time ice fishing,” said group president Ed Vermette.

Approximately 30 people attended and in addition to fishing enjoyed a free lunch including chili, hot dogs, bannock on a stick and hot beverages.

“Directors took the opportunity to practice setting up a tee-pee at the derby, this is in preparation for indigenous days in June,” said Vermette.

“The (group) purchased ice fishing ice equipment for this event and in hopes of making this an annual event. The board considers their first attempt at an ice fishing derby a great success and thank sponsors and all those that attended.”

The initiative was led by association director Lynda English. Prizes in numerous categories were awarded: Adults – Logan Penman, Alan Berg, Steve Carter; Youth – Kiarin Macintyre, Molly Coyne, Sydney Hodgson; Most Fish – Molly Coyne, Kiara Macintyre; Smallest Fish – Molly Coyne.
