BC Wildfire Service have reported a fire burning west of Revelstoke off of Highway 1.

The fire, given an approximate location of Ross Lang Cedar Mill around eight kilometers southwest of Revelstoke, has an estimated size of 0.50 hectares at this time according to the BC Wildfire Service interactive map.

Southeast Fire Centre fire information officer Ashley Davidoff says crews first responded to the fire around midnight, securing the perimeter to prevent further spreading.

Crews are currently on the scene monitoring the fire.

At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation, according to Davidoff.

The fire is not currently visible from the Trans Canada Highway, though heavy smoke and haze is noticeable both on the highway as well as within Revelstoke.

Davidoff says while this fire may be contributing to the smoke in the area, it is likely a culmination of fires across the province currently burning.

As of July 30, there have been 155 fires in the Southeast Fire Centre since April 1, 2018, contributing to 954 total fires throughout BC according to BC Wildfire Service.
