The Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department extinguished a small blaze in trees at the edge of the Thornhill community grounds May 23.
Fire chief Rick Boehm said the fire destroyed a camper that was parked there.
“It wasn’t a very big [camper.] We’re talking about a pickup truck style slide-in camper,” he said.
The camper was not attached to a truck at the time of the fire, and the owner of the camper wasn’t around. Boehm said it’s unlikely that the cause of the fire will be discovered.
“There was just so much damage and so much of [the camper] was thoroughly destroyed by fire,” he said. “Cause will be undetermined.”
The call came in around 2 p.m. and firefighters had the fire under control quickly, Boehm said.
“It obviously wasn’t too far from the fire station,” he said.
The community grounds are right next to the fire station.
Boehm said firefighters did a follow-up visit the following day and discovered another fire had ignited.
“We suspect as that fire had consumed the upper canopy of the trees close to it during the day, a spark must have dug in about 50 ft. away in the root bed of another group of trees,” he said. “We were able to go in there and extinguish that.”
