Langley RCMP, the local search and rescue team and a fire department crew searched a rural Langley property and the surrounding area near Robertson Crescent Saturday after a toddler was reported missing.

The two-year-old girl was playing with other children when she wandered off around 3 pm.

Her parents called for emergency help. After the search failed to locate her, a decision was made to drain a small pond on the family’s five-acre farm.

The young girl’s body was found in the empty pond around 7 p.m.

RCMP and the coroner continue to investigate, but authorities indicate it appears to be a tragic accident.

“She was playing in the yard with family and she wandered off,” said Langley RCMP Sgt. Garth Huziak. “Unfortunately water holds a certain attraction to children and this is a case of a moment’s inattention.”

The name of the girl has not been released.
