SURREY — There’s a silver lining in the case of a Surrey house fire early Friday morning that has left nine renters without a home.
All escaped without injury, thanks to a working smoke alarm.
“They were alerted to the fire by the smoke alarm,” Surrey Fire Battalion Chief Gary McHarg said. “Smoke alarms do save lives.”
The fire happened at about 3:30 a.m., in the 9600-block of 154th Street. Investigators are trying to determine the cause.
The outcome could have been deadly tragic if the alarm hadn’t been working. “Particularly that time of the day when most people are asleep,” McHarg said.
Extensive damage was done to both floors, he said.
