Smoke detectors save lives

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

“There is no common thread among the recent spate of house fires,” Canyon Lister Fire Department chief Glen Guthrie said on Tuesday.

More than 30 firefighters from Canyon Lister and Creston Fire Departments responded to a callout in the early hours on April 22. The five residents had been wakened by smoke alarms and evacuated the residence in the 2800 block of Canyon-Lister Road before firefighters arrived.

“When we got to the scene there were flames coming out from a small spot near the roof peak,” Guthrie said. “Very shortly after that, the entire roof was engaged.” Crews remained on the scene for 13 hours, putting out spot fires, and returned on Tuesday morning to do the same. Nothing is salvageable, he said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but Guthrie said there is nothing that appears suspicious.

“This fire is proof that smoke detectors save lives,” he added.
