Smoke seen hovering between Grand Forks and Christina Lake is from the wildfires in Washington state.
According to Karlie Shaughnessy, the fire information officer for Wildfire Management Branch’s Southeast Fire Centre, the smoke will be drifting up into the Boundary throughout this weekend.
“There are a lot of fires south of us in Washington,” Shaughnessy noted. “As soon as the wind changes it will get really smoky, like this weekend. It’s expected to get worse because the jet stream is supposed to be coming from the south.”
“There will also be an inversion, so it will trap all the smoke,” she said. “It all depends on wind direction.”
No fire has been reported within the Grand Forks and Boundary region but Shaugnessy did say that a forest officer has been dispatched to see how close fires are to the border.
