Every weekend, the Capital News and Lake Country Calendar will highlight this week’s top news stories.
1. A famous cuddly deer has been popular on social media lately. Lake Country firefighters combating wildfires in the Burns Lake area got the chance to meet it and also snapped a photo.
2. As part of Overdose Awareness Day Friday, the Capital News interviewed a mother who lost both her sons to overdoses.
Helen Jennens keeps an old photo of her sons – both sporting huge grins, their arms around each others’ shoulders – on her dresser, near to a metal sculpture inscribed with their names: Tyler and Rian.
3. The quest for the federal Conservative Party nomination in Kelowna-Lake Country is about to become a two-woman race.
Kelowna city councillor Tracy Gray is expected to announce next week she will seek the nomination.
Earlier this month, Kelowna developer Renee Wasylyk was the first person to announce she would seek the nomination and appears to have the backing of incumbent Conservative MPs Dan Albas (Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola) and Mel Arnold (Vernon-Shuswap), both of whom spoke at her nomination campaign kick-off.
4. The long wait is finally over.
John Hindle Drive, which will connect Glenmore with the UBC Okanagan campus, Highway 97 and the Kelowna Airport, opened to vehicles Friday at 2 p.m.
5. While some Kelowna companies may be facing a profit loss due to smoky skies, a climbing gym is performing better than ever in its down season.
