Snow storm hits Surrey and region Monday

A number of private schools are closed in the Surrey area, and side roads are socked in.

An anticipated snow storm hit the region Monday morning, and is expected to dump between five to 10 centimetres, depending on the area.

Residents in the Surrey area woke up to a thick blanket of snow Monday, which is likely to play havoc with the commute.

The snow has also caused a number of power outages in the areas of Surrey and White Rock.

Public schools in Coquitlam are open, but will have a delayed start time of 10 a.m. Regular dismissal time.

St. Michael’s Elementary School in Burnaby

The snowfall has caused a number of issues on the roads Monday. A tanker truck went off the road on Highway 1 in Burnaby and shortly after there was a multi-vehicle crash along the same stretch.

The Gaglardi off-ramp from Highway 1 westbound is blocked right now while crews remove the tanker from the ditch.

No serious injuries were reported.

Drivers are reporting issues on the roads throughout the region. People are urged to drive slowly, leave extra time for your commute and leave distance between vehicles.

Environment Canada says drivers should be prepared to adjust their driving with the changing road conditions.

SkyTrain operating normally – if falling snow affects the tracks, trains may be held a little longer at some stations.

Most buses are operating normally but some delays expected due to snowy road conditions.

Bus #20 – No service between Harrison Loop and Marine Drive due to the snow.

Bus #135 – Service terminating at 128 St & Crescent. No service between 128 & Crescent to Sullivan & Kidd.
