A new staircase to the sea will soon be built at Cains Park.
Sooke council recently agreed to spend $54,995 on the project.
In a report to council, district staff cited a rather steep embankment at the end of Kennedy Street South and noted it’s an area frequently used by children at Sooke elementary school for field trip activities.
Council was told that there are worn pathways indicating existing use throughout the area and the stairway will provide a safer method of accessing the beach below.
The staircase will also be open for public use, although the staff report noted that it is unlikely that the site will become a destination for people outside the neighbourhood, citing a lack of parking in the area as one factor that would limit the staircase’s use by the rest of the community.
Council also agreed to contract Rolling Tides Construction Inc. for the work.
