South Delta crime beat, week of April 6

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• April 6, 8:15 a.m., 5000-block 47th Ave.: Delta police received a report from a concerned citizen that an unknown male had walked up to the front door of the residence and stolen a bottle of hand sanitizer. The sanitizer was sitting in a stroller on the front porch. Value of stolen property was no more than $10. Due to the low value of the theft the complainant stated they were reporting for information purposes only at this time.

• April 6, 10:00 a.m., 7500-block Hopcott Rd.: An employee of the Tilbury-area business reported that sometime over the weekend an unknown suspect had cut through a wire cable tie in order to access a container at the rear of the property. The suspect stole a minor amount of material from the container that was valued at $50. The damage to the container was estimated at $100.

• April 10, 1:38 p.m., 4800-block 48th Ave.: Member of the public called to advise that their motorized scooter had run out of battery and requested police to assist in getting them home. Police attended, but a good Samaritan had already done the job.

• April 10, 3:47 p.m., Highway 17 and Deltaport Way: Police attended a collision whereby a vehicle being driven on Highway 17 lost control at the corner and ran into a flat deck truck in the merge lane. Fortunately there were no injuries but one vehicle was a write-off.

• April 11, 7:42 p.m., 4600-block Evergreen Lane: Police received a report from numerous concerned citizens that a male could be heard screaming and swearing for over an hour in a local residence. Police arrived on scene and observed the distraught man standing outside, surrounded by empty liquor bottles. The distraught individual was yelling incoherently about personal religious beliefs as well as conspiracy theories while banging on a homeowner’s door with a stick. Delta police apprehended the resident into custody where he could be transported to a local hospital in order to get required care and medical attention. Concerned citizens were pleased with the outcome of the disturbance call and the actions taken by the police.

Tsawwassen

• April 7, 2:00 p.m., 200-block Woodland Dr.: Police received a report of an attempted break and enter to a residence. The homeowner advised police the family was not home at the time of the occurrence and an unknown person had attempted to pry open a basement bathroom window. No entry was gained to the residence and no severe damage occurred to the window besides superficial scratches on the frame. The homeowner was advised by the police to call the report line if they see any suspicious activity in the neighbourhood.

• April 9, 6:10 a.m., 5200-block 11th Ave.: Delta police received a complaint of a possible break and enter to a local residence. Upon arrival to the house, the police observed the suspect laying on the driveway under the restraint of a tenant of the household. After speaking to the tenant, police concluded the suspect had broken a second story window in order to gain access to the house. Nothing of value was stolen from the property. The suspect was heavily intoxicated and in need of medical attention. Police arrested the suspect and transported them to a local hospital where they remained in custody until assessed by a medical professional. The homeowner of the residence spoke to the police and concluded they did not wish to pursue charges.

• April 10, 7:59 p.m., 1000-block Pacific Dr.: Complainant reported a group of young men apparently not abiding by social distancing guidelines. Police attended and determined that the men all resided together in the same household, and thus social distancing guidelines did not apply.

• April 11, 1:20 p.m., 500-block Milsom Wynd: Complainant called in to report a theft from a personal vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of a residence and appeared to have been rummaged through sometime overnight. There was no reportable damage to the outside of the vehicle, which led the registered owner to believe that the vehicle had been left unlocked overnight. The property stolen from the vehicle totalled $1,000.
