South Delta crime beat, week of Aug. 23

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• Aug. 23, 9:56 a.m., 8200-block River Rd.: Complainant reported that a vehicle had nearly hit his vehicle multiple times while changing lanes, and that the driver appeared to be intoxicated. Police located the vehicle, initiated a traffic stop and suspicion was formed that the driver was impaired. The approved screening device demand was read and the driver provided a breath sample resulting in a “warn.” The male was picked upon by a family member and the vehicle was legally parked for the night.

• Aug. 25, 9:11 p.m., Booth Road and River Road: Complainant reported seeing a male apparently trying to open car doors, before walking away on foot. Police patrolled the area and located the male, who appeared heavily intoxicated. The male advised that he was just walking around the area and on his way home when he had accidentally stumbled into a parked car. Police transported the male from the scene to his residence where he was placed into the care of his family.

• Aug. 27, 5:38 p.m., 3600-block Arthur Dr.: Police were flagged down by a passing motorist, who advised that a cyclist required assistance out of a ditch. Police located the cyclist, who stated that he was not struck by any vehicles but that he had fallen due to a downward curve in the roadside. The cyclist had minor cuts to his hands and his glasses were scratched, but declined to seek medical attention.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• Aug. 24, 8:00 a.m., 3300-block Highway 99: Police were en route to traffic court in Richmond when a vehicle passed the officer going 155 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Police conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver a ticket for excessive speeding and impounded the vehicle for seven days. Of note, the driver was actually taking the vehicle out for a test drive at the time.

• Aug. 25, 12:07 a.m., 1000-block 56th St.: Complainant reported that there were teenagers screaming near their residence. Police attended and spoke with a group, who advised they were cheering each other on during a midnight run. The complainant was advised that there was no physical altercation or any fights that had occurred. The group said they would quiet down and head home.

• Aug. 25, 3:39 p.m., 100-block BC Ferries causeway: Complainant reported an intoxicated male at the long term parking lot at the ferry terminal. Police attended and located the intoxicated male, who was unable to care for himself. Police arrested the male for being in a state of intoxication in a public place and transported him to cells to be held until sober and released without charge.

• Aug. 27, 12:53 p.m., 5600-block Highway 17A: Police were contacted about a suspected impaired driver, and located the vehicle at the above intersection. The driver blew a “fail” on the approved screening device. Police then determined the driver had two previous “fail” results under the immediate roadside prohibition legislation. Due to this driving history, police opted to proceed with a criminal impaired driving investigation, and the driver was taken back to police headquarters to continue the investigation.
