South Delta crime beat, week of July 5

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• July 7, 12:10 a.m., 6400-block Ladner Trunk Rd.: Police observed a vehicle traveling above the posted speed limit. Driver didn’t appear to be confident with their answers as to where they had been coming from. When asked if they had had anything to drink, the driver stated they had not. Police asked driver to provide a breathe sample. Driver provide two breath samples, which resulted in the driver receiving an immediate roadside prohibition for three days and a vehicle impoundment.

• July 7, 9:05 p.m., Highway 99 and Highway 17 off-ramp: Police were called to a collision involving a motorcycle and a deer. The deer jumped in front of the motorcycle. Fortunately, the driver of the motorcycle was well-equipped with safety equipment and didn’t sustain any injures. Unfortunately, the deer did not make it.

• July 10, 11:05 p.m., 4500-block Highway 17: Police observed a vehicle swerving in and out of its lane and initiated a traffic stop. Driver denied having consumed any alcohol that evening. Police could detect the odour of alcohol on the drivers breath. Police demanded a breathe sample, which resulted in the driver receiving a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver’s vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

• July 20, 7:27 p.m., location withheld: Landlord contacted police requesting a wellness check after not having heard from his tenant for a week. Landlord advised the dog was barking in the residence but the tenant was not there. Police determined the residence was empty but located a dog and cat inside. Residence was in extremely poor condition, and both animals were turned over to Delta Animal Control. Tenant was eventually located and police confirmed their well-being. He stated he was in process of moving. No safety concerns.

Tsawwassen

• July. 7, 8:17 p.m., 1100-block 56th St.: Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and noted a distinct odour of liquor from the driver. A breath sample was conducted where the driver was eventually issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition while also receiving a violation ticket for not having a driver’s licence. The driver gave police a false name until his real name was identified and then he was discovered to have an invalid driver’s licence. The vehicle was towed away and the driver, along with their passenger, took a taxi out of town.

• July. 9, 3:22 p.m., 5000-block Canoe Pass Way: Police were called to a shopping mall where a male was observed stealing clothing. The man was allegedly burning the price tags off the clothing outside of the mall. Upon police arrival, the male was arrested and admitted to stealing the clothes after having no proof of purchase. The total value of the stolen items was $166.74.

• July. 9, 9:31 a.m., 5600-block 12th Ave.: Police conducted a traffic stop to check the sobriety of the driver. Breath samples from the driver resulted in her receiving a three-day immediate roadside prohibition. A friend of the driver came and picked up the driver and her vehicle.

• July 10, 8:57 p.m., 200-block Tsawwassen Beach Rd.: Complainant reported a large group of youth along the beach. Police attended and observed approximately 25 youth clustered together. Youth agreed to move along, and also clean up their garbage.

• July 10, 10:30 p.m., Candlewyck Park tennis courts: Complainant reported a suspicious male “skulking around” and provided a description. Police attended and located a male matching the description nearby. He detailed having a clandestine meeting with a female friend at the tennis courts, and explained he was now returning home. Nothing suspicious noted.

• July 11, 8:30 p.m., Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall: Police noted a vehicle fail to stop for two stop signs in the parking lot. The driver was read the approved screening device demand for a breath sample, and failed both samples. The driver was served a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.
