South Delta crime beat, week of Sept. 27

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

Ladner

• Sept. 28, 2:41 p.m., 6700-block Highway 17: The complainant reported that a company truck tailgated his vehicle for two kilometres while the truck’s driver was also on his cellphone. Police contacted the company and informed them of the report. They were also warned that the described driving behaviors were ticketable offences that could be served to the company for being the registered owner. The company representative stated that they will be speaking to the driver of the vehicle and taking the appropriate disciplinary action.

• Sept. 29, 11:00 a.m., 1500-block Highway 91: Police observed a vehicle travelling at approximately 95 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The vehicle then conducted a lane change on the bridge without signaling. Police turned on their emergency equipment and the vehicle did not stop or react, though other traffic safely pulled over. Police did not follow. Police instead attended the registered owner’s address and spoke with him. He advised that he was the driver and took responsibility, and apologized for not paying attention to the emergency equipment. He was served with a violation ticket for failing to stop for police.

• On Sept. 29, 9:20 a.m., 6700-block Highway 17: Police were conducting on-foot laser enforcement when a vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed, estimated to be 140 km/h. Laser speed was locked at 144 km/h in an 80 km/h highway zone. The vehicle was subsequently stopped and the driver provided an interim B.C. driver’s licence and registration. The driver was served with an excessive speed ticket and the vehicle was towed.

• Sept. 29, 5:23 p.m., location withheld: Complainant advised that a man attended his residence while carrying a baseball bat and told the complainant that his dogs were a nuisance and that he needs to clean up his property. The complainant advised that the male was not threatening, he just wanted the incident documented. Approximately 20 minutes later, the complainant reported that a second neighbour attended his residence and complained about his messy property and loud dogs. Police spoke with the first neighbour, who stated he was walking to someone’s house to return a baseball bat when he and the complainant got into an argument. No threat was intended, the neighbour just wanted the property cleaned up. Police also spoke with the second neighbour, who stated he was concerned with the complainant’s behaviour. All parties were advised to phone police if further issues arise.

• Oct. 1, 12:01 a.m., 54A Street and Ladner Trunk Road: Police observed a male in all dark clothing jay-walking. The pedestrian was stopped and he provided his name, and his identification was confirmed. The male was sent on his way with a warning. At 12:10 a.m., police observed the same male standing at a bus stop with a large blow torch in his hand. He was observed lighting items on fire on the ground and in the garbage can and scorching the bus stop bench. Police arrested him for arson. He declined to speak to a lawyer. Police observed minor scorch marks on the trash can and bench but no real damage was done. Police seized the torch and a pepper spray from the man and drove him to Bridgeport Station in Richmond.

Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen First Nation

• Sept. 30, 12:45 p.m., 2300-block Raven Lane: Tsawwassen First Nation Lands bylaw officer called to report an unknown person who was loading gravel into the back of a vehicle from a construction site. Police attended and located the vehicle and registered owner in the driveway. The male was unloading the gravel from the back of the vehicle. He advised that he was helping build a new deck and was one bucket short of being able to level the paving stones. Police advised him of the bylaw and told him if he needs further gravel to purchase it elsewhere.

• Oct. 1, 3:33 a.m., 5300-block Belair Dr: Complainant reported a male trying vehicle door handles and provided a description to police. Police attended the area and located a vehicle in the driveway of the complainant’s neighbour with the interior dome light on and the silhouette of a person in the interior of the vehicle. The male exited the vehicle and hid behind the hood of the vehicle. The male was arrested and identified. A query of the suspect revealed he was breaching multiple probation orders. He was chartered and transported to Delta cells.

• Oct. 3, 8:29 a.m., 700-block Gilchrist Dr.: Complainant called to report a suspicious male who had hid in a driveway at 5:51 a.m. The same male was seen walking in multiple driveways and trying car door handles. Also of note, police received a second call of the same male trying the door handles of a vehicle close by from 3:26 a.m. The male did not gain access to any of the vehicles. The investigation is continuing.
