Spall stats soar, breakfast break, library support

The Township of Spallumcheen is doing its part for the Regional District of North Okanagan’s building inspections function

The Township of Spallumcheen is doing its part for the Regional District of North Okanagan’s building inspections function.

Through August, Spallumcheen stats for housing units and permits tallied $7.3 million.

“Our numbers are almost equal to those of Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby and the electoral areas combined,” said Christine Fraser.

The electoral areas’ figures were just shy of $7 million while Armstrong’s total was $1.3 million, Enderby’s was $684,000 and Lumby’s total was $637,800.

Spall’s numbers are up from the 2012 total of $4,072,300 through the same nine-month period.

Breakfast break

After a year’s absence, the township will again contribute to the Pleasant Valley Secondary School breakfast program.

Mayor Janice Brown said she’ll take $200 from her mayor’s discretionary fund and donate it to the program, which requested help in a letter from school vice-principal Shane Coutlee.

“This year we will be preparing breakfasts two mornings a week, and you can help us be successful by donating goods, services and/or monetary gifts,” wrote Coutlee.

Council will send a cheque and a letter to the school asking that further requests be submitted through the township’s grants-in-aid program.

Library chairs

Armstrong’s Okanagan Regional Library branch is in need of more seating.

ORL executive director Stephanie Hall wrote a letter to Armstrong and Spallumcheen councils thanking them for their financial support in 2013 which allowed ORL to purchase shelving and reconfigure the children’s area at the branch.

The 2014 request is for $800.

“The seating in the facility is constantly in use and the branch could use a few more chairs,” wrote Hall.

Coun. Andrew Casson moved that Spallumcheen donate $400 towards the chairs, which would be their half of the request (the other half would come from Armstrong).

The motion was unanimously passed, and council will send a letter to the city informing them of their decision.
