Another potential partner has dropped out of plans for a regional parks program.
Following Enderby’s lead, Spallumcheen council decided Monday not to participate in the Regional District of North Okanagan’s parkland legacy fund.
“Why do we need another level of bureaucracy?” said Coun. Joe Van Tienhoven, pointing out that the township already has a process in place to buy parkland.
RDNO has investigated the system used by the Regional District of Central Okanagan in which member communities provide funds to purchase and maintain lands of regional significance.
Presently, the six municipalities within RDNO are being asked if they are interested in the concept.
Coun. Christine Fraser believes the initiative may benefit residents of more urban communities but parkland isn’t as critical an issue for those in rural areas.
“We have a lot of backcountry and Crown land people can use for recreation,” she said.
