Sparwood has come out in force to support the upcoming Sparwood Community Garden, with the new organisation having gained 145 members.
“It’s only been three weeks,” said community garden vice president Dina Dominick.
Dominick and members of the community garden were at the Greenwood Mall in Sparwood on Monday for the garden’s first seed swap and fundraiser, selling plants and items to raise funds for the garden.
The garden was formally given the go-ahead by the District of Sparwood at the end of March, with a land-use agreement signed between the garden and the district.

Dominick said that community support has been amazing.
“They’re really excited, they can’t wait for work to begin.”
The garden, at 440 Engelmann Spruce Drive will have 20 plots, and will be available for anyone in the community as long as they pay a $30 per season fee.
Through fundraising and grants, the garden has managed to secure some $35,000 in donations from the Columbia Basin Trust and Teck, with community fundraising efforts set to continue.
Work is set to begin on constructing the garden soon, with work on creating garden beds and fencing required.
