Sparwood locals take to the trails in this year’s final event

Holy Fit encourages residents to hike, bike, and run despite dropping temperatures

The Sparwood Trails Alliance (STA) is hosting their second annual Holy Fit event this month, with a socially distant twist.

Hoping to keep the spirit of fitness alive despite restrictions on organized events, this year’s Holy Fit will be held through the fitness tracking app, Strava.

“It’s important to keep active and remain healthy, especially during the challenging times with COVID-19,” said secretary of the STA, Christina Bilski.

“Ensuring people stay physically active is great for our mental health and hitting the trails is a great way to achieve this.”

To participate, from Sep. 21 until Sep. 27, locals are to complete a minimum 30 minute activity on a STA built trail, whether it be a hike, bike, or walk.

Usable trails include Meander, Lower Meander, Middletown, Middletown Extension, By Pass, and the new Lunch Loop. Each trail can be found on Trailforks.

Once the activities are uploaded to the STA’s Strava group, participants will be entered into a draw. Those partaking in the event will receive a limit of one entry per day.

Wrapping up one of their busiest trail seasons yet, Holy Fit is the STA’s last event of the year.

The event’s draw prizes will be handed out on Oct. 3, and include a STA 2021 membership, STA branded clothing, and gift cards to local bike shops.

All participants of the Holy Fit event must be members of the STA, as well as part of the STA’s Strava group.

“I encourage everyone who utilizes the trails to purchase a membership with the Sparwood Trails Alliance. Being able to show that our membership numbers are increasing is incredibly helpful when writing grants to obtain more funding, and more funding means more trails.”

The STA will be switching their focus for the upcoming months, looking towards grants and fundraising ideas to complete their Lunch Loop Network.
