Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School student Iris Striker struck gold – a gold medal that is.
Iris received a medal from the Royal Conservatory for Grade 9 Speech Arts, which is significant considering she was competing against 20 competitors in the provincial finals held last year in Victoria.
On top of that accomplishment, Iris also came second in the province for Intermediate Speech Arts.
“It’s the first gold medal I’ve received in ten years. The province is very competitive,” said Iris.
She said there aren’t many people in the region taking part in speech arts and that she would like to set up lessons and teach as well.
“I highly recommend speech arts – it has helped me with presentations in class and has given me confidence in big crowds,” said Iris.
She said speech arts also broadens one’s horizons and is a skill students can fall back on.
