The city is conducting a trial speed limit reduction on Departure Bay Road at Departure Bay Beach from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend.
To improve walking and cycling comfort and safety, the city will trial a 40 km/h speed limit for the summer, notes a city press release. The municipality, ICBC, and RCMP will host education and enforcement campaigns.
Departure Bay Road carries about 11,000 vehicles per day and currently has a 50-kilometres-per-hour speed limit with a 30-km/h advisory speed at the Kinsman Park playground. During the summer, Departure Bay Beach becomes a popular destination with a huge increase in cyclists and pedestrians, the release notes.
