Wednesday, September 28 is Raise a Reader Day in Clearwater.
There will be two events to raise money for literacy projects in our community.
You can help by participating in one of these events as a volunteer, giving a donation, or participating in the Adult Team Spelling Bee (don’t let this scare you … this is a team event so words are submitted by a team of four – not individually)!
So far I have representatives from the high school, elementary school, Community Resource Centre, and Yellowhead Community Services participating in the day. It would be great if I could get representatives from the District of Clearwater, Chamber of Commerce, Adult Tutor Program, Early Childhood Educators, Rotary Club, North Thompson Aboriginal Sharing Centre, Senior’s Group, Reading Clubs and local businesses.
Raise a Reader newspaper campaign
The “Raise a Reader Day” newspaper campaign will be running on Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m.to1 p.m. and I am looking for at least three volunteers.
If you are not familiar with the campaign it involves groups of volunteers heading out to strategic locations within the community, seeking donations in exchange for a special edition of a newspaper. The campaign helps educate Canadians about literacy issues and raises money for local literacy initiatives. This is the second time Clearwater will be participating in this fundraiser.
Adult team spelling bee
To Spell or Not to Spell – That BEE the Question!
The Clearwater and Area Literacy Program invites you to participate in the Adult Team Spelling Bee Challenge! Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in the Clearwater Secondary School Pit
Please call 250-674-2600 to register your team or business.
Join us for some laughs and competition with area businesses, colleagues, and community members. Team costumes are optional but will earn you a free “bye” word – HAVING FUN is one of our goals!
Each table of four will work together to spell words taken from the “Collins Gage Canadian Paperback Dictionary.” Winners will be publicly congratulated in the local media and on our website, and will be presented with a team trophy to recognize their official bragging rights as the 2011 Spelling Bee Champions!
Your support of this event will help to ensure the continuation of literacy programs in our community. You can participate in a number of ways:
Team Table ($100) – a table of four friends or colleagues who will compete for the honour of being the 2011 Spelling Bee Champions!
Individual ($25) – don’t have a business or team, but love a spelling challenge? We will seat you at a table with like-minded individuals. High School Student (one or more spaces at $25 each) – help an enthusiastic student who wouldn’t otherwise be able to participate.
Corporate Team Sponsor ($200) – With a corporate sponsorship of one school or non-profit team in the Spelling Bee you will get one free “bye” word for the team, your business’s name recognized in the program and all advertising and your business will be publicly recognized at the event
Word Sponsor ($25) – Purchase a “bye” word for any participating team of your choice
Spectators are very welcome! Spectator entry is by donation.
What happens to the money raised on Raise a Reader Day?
All donations collected on Raise a Reader Day from the newspaper campaign and the Adult Team Spelling Bee are matched in whole, or in part, by various national and local sponsors as well as the provincial government. The funds are distributed by the Clearwater and Area Raise a Reader Committee through a granting process. Last year, the newspaper campaign raised $3900 (includes matching funds) that went directly back into the community. In the past, our community has received grants for a Parent Child Mother Goose Program, a Literacy Home Visiting Program for Preschool Children, and the Partner Assisted Learning Program (Adult Tutor Program).
