Donna Gibbons said she’s been psychic all her life, but it wasn’t until she flatlined after a serious car accident three years ago, that her abilities “doubled.”
Now after a long period of healing, she’s on the verge of publishing three books, and beginning a new chapter in her life as an author.
“They totally believed I was going to die,” Gibbons said. “I guess I did die for a short period of time … They didn’t think there was anyway I was going to live through it.”
The first book is called Haunting in Hatzic, and comes out in a couple weeks.
Hatzic Rock (Xá:ytem) was designated a national historic site of Canada for its important Indigenous archaeological significance.
Gibbons has lived in Hatzic since 1991, and said she’s been a site manager, sat on the board of the Friends of Hatzic Rock Society, and has even been the management chair over the years.
But the book focuses on her experiences as a medium at the site, and visions she said she’s had of a young Indigenous boy on top of the rock, calling to the spirits to guide him.
She said she does much of her writing at the site.
Something different about Gibbons’ books is they are written entirely in cursive, something she says is a “dying” art form she hopes to bring back.
The pages are also accompanied by illustrations she does herself.
“It’s very different. It’s not just out of the box, it’s a brand new container.”
The book is the first in a series of 11 she plans to write about being a medium.
The second book will be about her stays in the haunted inns in the Fraser Valley, and the third will detail the haunted locations here in Mission.
Another book she’s completed is a fantasy-colouring book called The Doodle Dragons.
She created it 25 years ago with her niece and nephew before the resurgent popularity of colouring books today, she said.
She also has a new book coming out which tells her story of recovery from the life-altering car accident, called The Healer Healed: My Journey with Cannabis.
The books are being self-published and printed in Abbotsford, and will have a small run to start.
Gibbons said she’s in the process of getting a website created as well.
“This is my first book and I’m 67,” She said. “I’ve been a writer for most of my life, but this is the first time I’m putting it down on paper.”
