Elk Valley motorists will be more informed on weather events this winter as the regional highway contractor increases its presence on social media.
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting has provided highway maintenance services for the region since 2001.
General Manager Andries de Witt said it has been a busy year for the company coming out of a long winter from the previous season.
“Come spring, the operations team will start to plan for the next winter season,” he said in a statement to The Free Press.
de Witt said Mainroad’s five winter service area yards are staffed 24/7.
This winter, staff will strive to keep motorists more informed on weather events by staying active on social media, providing updates via Facebook.com/mainroadeastk and Twitter (@mainroadeastk).
de Witt said crew members are starting to notice an improvement in driver behaviour.
“It is easy to become complacent during the winter season and we want to keep sending the message that everyone should slow down, drive to the conditions, and be aware that the weather can change quickly and unexpectedly in the Kootenays,” he said.
