Strong wind, heavy rain forecast for this weekend

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected over the weekend, so bundle up and stay indoors!

Environment Canada said on Friday afternoon heavy rain is expected for the inland sections of the north and central coasts, the Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound, including Kitimat.

“An atmospheric river will take aim at North Vancouver Island and the Central Coast beginning early Saturday morning delivering heavy rain and mild conditions until mid-day Sunday. Rainfall amounts of 50 to 70 mm are expected by Sunday morning for the aforementioned regions,” warns the agency.

Of particular concern is the fact that the mild air will result in rain at almost all elevations, with high runoff and rising river levels likely through the weekend.

“Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

The District of Kitimat’s Leisure Services issued a similar warning on their Facebook page this afternoon.

“Rising Kitimat River water levels can change quickly and without warning. In 2017, 16 recreational vehicles were washed down the Kitimat River due to rapid flooding. Heavy rainfall can cause the river to rise rapidly. Please ensure that you are aware of your surroundings and are able to get out fast if water levels change.”

Rescued! 13 people along the Kitimat River bank

The 2017 flood in Kitimat that fortunately didn’t claim any lives was a dire warning, galvanizing council into finally putting an end to riverbank camping.

Leisure Services also advised residents to steer clear of Radley Park, especially with the strong winds expected this weekend along with the current construction taking place at the park.
