Street hockey tournament planned for improved Brown Road

The recently upgraded Brown Road will be the backdrop for a brand new District of West Kelowna street hockey tournament next month.

Brown Road—from Main Street to Gosset Road—will be blocked off and transformed into five road hockey arenas Sunday, Aug. 24 from noon to 6:15 p.m.

Recreation department summer student Jeremy Flett and economic development summer student Kyla Thurnheer have been involved in planning the tournament, which is open to youth ages six to 14.

“We figured the best way to show off the new road is through a street hockey tournament,” said Flett.

The tournament will include three divisions: Ages six to eight, nine to 11 and 12 to 14. Both boys and girls are invited to sign-up.

Teams of four to eight players can register at a cost of $160 per team. The fee includes a t-shirt, lunch, water and refreshments.

Each team is guaranteed to play at least three games.

Prizes will be awarded for the top teams in each division, best-dressed team, top goaltender and top scorer.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to KidSport: A not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids 18 and under.

Thurnheer said the entire community is invited to the event—even if they don’t know any of the participating hockey players.

“We think it’ll be a good event to come out and see. We’re going to have a barbecue going down there…so even if you’re not participating in the tournament, it’s a great event for the public to (support),” said Thurnheer.

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Justin Schultz is also expected to make an appearance.

Flett said the district is in need of volunteers and referees to help make the tournament run smoothly.

For more information, or to register, call the district’s recreation department at 778-797-8800, or visit the recreation office at 2760 Cameron Rd.
