The Sts’ailes Community School will be continuing its online-only program until early February, the Sts’ailes Chief and council have decided.
According to a notice from principal Bill Dietrich, concerns about rising COVID-19 in neighbouring communities prompted the school to extend its online-only program past the winter break.
“It goes without saying this is uncharted territory for all families,” the notice reads. “While the entire organization is working together to limit the spread of COVID-19 within the community and our school family, there continues to be a significant and alarming increase in the surrounding centres that include our student catchment area.”
The school first moved to an online-only program in the beginning of December, sending students home for two weeks to attend virtual classes before the winter break. This recent decision will extend that program until Feb. 8.

“It may not be the ideal situation at this time, but it is the safest option,” the notice reads. Chief and council will revisit the decision based on provincial COVID-19 numbers.
Visitors are currently not allowed to enter the Sts’ailes First Nation, including off-reserve members. (Exceptions are given for members who are providing essential services for someone in the community.) The Sts’ailes administration offices are closed at this time.
