Berwick Retirement Communities Ltd has withdrawn a subject subdivision application for 180 Jensen Ave. East in Parksville.

In a letter to city council dated Sept. 17, Berwick president and CEO Chris Denford, on behalf of land owner Revera Inc., said the application was withdrawn as all work and acvitity for the Berwick Parksville Retirement Complex at 180 Jensen has been stopped, pending resolution of a legal challenge to the rezoning of 222 Corfield St.

“Work has continued on previously committed site work and the permit application in the hope that the mayor and council would recognize that the intended land use of 222 Corfield would be totally incompatible with that of our seniors residence, the home to 250 seniors which includes a daycare centre for children of those of our 150 employees who need it,” the letter stated. “On Thursday, Sept. 13, Bill Bomhof, Berwick’s project and construction manager, informed the building inspector that we will not accept the approved building permit and engineering fees and the development cost charges of $2.8 million. As it appears council is determined to proceed with the supportive housing and shelter project in a completely inappropriate location, we wish to leave the land in its current form and withdraw the subdivision applicaton.”
