The Michel-Natal Royal Canadian Legion in Sparwood is looking to change its image and increase its membership.

The executive of the Legion is looking for suggestions from the community to attract new members and customers. It is also trying to get the message out that membership is open to anyone 19 years or older and is not just for veterans anymore.

Due to a drop in usage in recent years, the Sparwood branch has been served notice from the BC/Yukon Command that if its numbers doesn’t increase, it could be closed. This has happened in other small towns.

Losing the Legion would mean losing a significant and vital part of the community. In addition to members marching in local parades and hosting the Remembrance Day ceremonies, the Legion is it a major sponsor of the Elk Valley Air Cadets, and also provides financial assistance to other service clubs, individuals, families in need and other groups.

The executive would like to hear if there is interest in activities such as crib or poker tournaments, darts or games nights; what would it take to bring you to the Legion?

Currently there is an acoustic music jam every second Friday night from 7-10 pm, darts on Thursday nights, and a meat draw and 50/50 tickets on Saturday afternoons.

Those interested in becoming a member, or to make suggestions for other activities, can contact the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 81 by calling (250) 425-0081 or can drop into the social club at 117 Centennial Square, Sparwood.
