Summerland will participate in a nationwide fitness initiative in early June.
At the municipal council meeting on May 14, council passed a resolution that the community participates in National Health and Fitness Day on the first Saturday in June.
“We are planning health and wellness activities for that time,” said Lori Mullin, recreation manager for the municipality.
The day coincides with the Summerland Action Festival, which is held on the first weekend of June.
Some of the events during Action Festival include a slo-pitch tournament, the Giant’s Head Run and Man of Steel Triathlon and other activities.
Senator Nancy Greene Raine is promoting National Health and Fitness Day, with a goal of making Canada the fittest nation on earth.
“Given the rising crisis of inactivity in Canada, we believe that initiatives such as this are a key step in helping to build healthier and more active communities,” a letter from her office stated.
