Ten Surrey pyrophiles lost their fireworks and earned $500 fines on Halloween night.
The City of Surrey has had strict regulations regarding the sale and letting of fireworks since 2005.
Prior to Halloween, Surrey bylaw officers seized a total of $107,000 worth of fireworks, and handed out five fines of $500 each.
Three of those were to vendors, and two were to people in possession of fireworks.
On Halloween, six bylaw officers were kept busy until the end of their shift at midnight.
They handed out 10 fines of $500 apiece, and seized a total of $8,000 in fireworks.
Jas Rehal, Surrey’s manager of bylaw enforcement said the RCMP seized the fireworks and firecrackers.
For the past decade, the city has annually warned the public that fireworks in this city are forbidden.
“I think we’ve come a long way since the bylaw changes,” Rehal told The Leader Tuesday. “The noise complaints have gone down, but if you look at last night, there still were a bit of fireworks going off.”
Municipalities that allow fireworks include; Burnaby, Delta, New Westminster, District of North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Vancouver.
Delta requires a $200 permit, which must be obtained 10 days in advance. They can only be obtained by someone 19 or older.
